Live in Houseboat Repairer on the River Adur

Bloomin' Adur is seeking multi-skilled construction tradesperson(s) who share our passion for working on the Estuary houseboats. This is a live-in position, and most bills are covered except for electric, on the Houseboat Verda.

The primary focus of the job is general maintenance, which involves handling tasks like repairing leaks in bilges and waterproofing non-standard roofs. It can be physically and mentally demanding work, and it's not always the cleanest job! The ability to work independently is essential, and supervisory skills would be a valuable asset.

You will reside on the Houseboat Verda, an art project, renowned as the most photographed residence in Shoreham by Sea. The upper deck of the boat serves as a space for various community events.

Bloomin' Adur comprises a collection of 7 boats moored along the Shoreham by Sea Riverbank, BN43 5YH. Among them are 3 WW2 Motor Torpedo Boats and a 1929 Gosport Portsmouth ferry (Verda).

Having lived on these boats since 1986, I have developed a profound appreciation for their historical significance and the creative freedom they offer for design and construction in my own style. I view this work as boat renovation, giving new life to former working vessels.

Due to budget constraints, I often repurpose and adapt materials, which reduces material costs but demands more labor. Consequently, I have acquired diverse skills, and I am seeking applicants with a similar attitude and adaptability.

Of the 7 boats in the project, 2 remain undeveloped. Notably, The Heron, a former Vosper MTB, is a substantial project I hope to recommence, aiming to fulfill the original ambition of making her seaworthy.

As temporary volunteers also work on this site, this post may not be suitable for individuals with childcare responsibilities. However, I would be favorable towards applications from a couple.
