Acquired from a house sale in Fontette, in the southern Champagne region. This was apparently presented to the father of the seller on his discharge from the French army.
In France, there is a tradition started in the 1930s of presenting a skittle or bowling pin to a soldier or sailor when his military service is completed. This is known in French as " Prendre La Quille".
The old skittles were often painted in the colours of the soldier's regiment and he would keep this memento as a souvenir of his national service.
